Complete Streets Program

The MassDOT Complete Streets Funding Program provides technical assistance and construction funding to eligible municipalities to make safety and accessibility improvements for all travel modes including driving, walking, biking, and transit, and for people of all ages and abilities.

Municipalities must pass a Complete Streets Policy and develop a Prioritization Plan to be eligible. Engineering prepared a Complete Street Policy and presented the policy to the Select Board who approved the policy in June 2022,  The policy was forwarded to and approved by MassDOT in July 2022.  Upon approval, the Town hired a consultant (paid for with eligible state funds) to help put together a Prioritization Plan.  The Prioritization Plan would identify 20-30 location for improvement and rank the locations by importance (factoring in cost, ability to construct, etc...).  The Town's consultant, Environmental Partners, created an on-line GIS based portal where residents could identify locations across town that needed improvement.  Public input was received over the summer of 2023.  Over 200 locations were identified by the time the portal was closed on August 15, 2023.  After reviewing the feedback, the project that was prioritized for the first application for construction funds was a sidewalk that connected Old Bass River Road to the Route 134 and Cape Cod Rail Trail area.  The sidewalk will extend from the Old Bass River Road bridge along Old Bass River Road to Olde Dennis Approach, use the existing sidewalk on Main Street and continue along Market Place and Route 134 to the Cape Cod Rail Trail parking area.  The Town will finalize design plans and schedule the construction work for the Fall 2024/Spring 2025 timeframe.
